Back to School with Braces

30 Oct 2017 | 0 Comments

Back to School with BracesNow that school’s back in session, it means a return to your regular schedule – for better or for worse! A return to seeing your acquaintances, a return to doing homework, and an unfortunate return to having to wake up much earlier. While it may seem all too familiar, there can be a drastic change to this process – your new braces. Although you may have already become accustomed to wearing your braces at home, it can be a brand-new – and sometimes worrying – experience to have to wear them while outside the comforts of your home. That’s where we’re glad to help! When you go to visit the best orthodontist in West Palm Beach here at Lunsford Orthodontics, we’re also happy to give you all the helpful advice needed to ensure that your orthodontic treatment is a success, including these tips for going back to school with your new braces.

Pack a Braces-Friendly Lunch

By packing your own lunch, you’ll be able to guarantee that you’ll have access to foods that will both be enjoyable and safe for you to eat with your braces. We recommend packing plenty of braces-friendly foods like pasta, lunch meat, yogurt, and soft fruits.

Bring a Dental Kit

After you’ve eaten your braces-friendly lunch, you’ll probably remember that it’s important for you to brush your teeth afterward. After all, a patient with braces is advised to brush his or her teeth once after every meal. Having said that, brushing your teeth after lunch may prove to be a problem as you likely won’t be able to go back home for several more hours. Not to worry though! If you bring a dental kit with you, you’ll be able to brush your teeth when you have a few minutes of free time. As your Boynton Beach orthodontist and orthodontic team, we recommend taking a dental kit with you that has all of your needed supplies for cleaning your teeth. This can include:

  • A travel toothbrush
  • Some toothpaste
  • Dental floss

Also, if you need rubber bands or elastics for your braces, you should pack a few extra ones along with some orthodontic wax in your kit.

Wear a Mouthguard While Playing Sports

If you’re going to play sports (whether it’s in gym or as an after-school activity), you should make sure to wear a mouthguard. Mouthguards will help keep your teeth and braces safe while making sure that none of your hard work during the orthodontic process will go to waste. While some school sports have mouthguard requirements (which include football, hockey, and lacrosse), you’ll want to wear one for all sports that have the potential for physical contact.
