Summertime is officially here, and you know what that means--delicious summer foods like BBQ, fruits, and more. You shouldn’t have to miss out on summer’s best indulgences just because you’re on the path to a perfect smile with your braces. Here at Lunsford McCaffrey Orthodontics, we care about the well-being of both your teeth and the rest of you! That being said, we’ve put together some braces-friendly recipes that will help you keep your cool in the West Palm Beach summer heat.

Fruity Energy Smoothie

During the summer, an ice cold smoothie is the best way to stay refreshed--and you won’t have to worry about anything getting stuck in your braces!

  • 1 cup of pineapple, peeled and chopped
  • 1 medium orange, peeled
  • 1 cup raspberries
  • 1 medium banana, peeled
  • 1 cup almond milk (or any milk you prefer)
  • 1 cup crushed ice

  • How To Make It:

Place all ingredients into the blender and blend on medium/high until it reaches your desired consistency. Pour into glasses and enjoy!

No-Churn Vanilla OR Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

Now just because you’re on the track to a perfect smile doesn’t mean your sweet tooth has gone anywhere. This next recipe is all about our favorite food group--ice cream! Ice cream makers can cost hundreds of dollars, but this recipe doesn’t require one at all. All you’ll need is a hand mixer or electric mixer. This recipe goes two ways: vanilla ice cream or mint chocolate chip ice cream.

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • *If you want vanilla ice cream, stop here. If you want mint chocolate chip, add the following ingredients:
  • 1/2 tsp peppermint extract
  • 3 drops green food coloring
  • 1 cup mint chocolate chips

  • How To Make It:

    1. Pour heavy whipping cream into large bowl. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the cream until stiff peaks are formed.
    2. In a separate bowl, add vanilla and sweetened condensed milk. Whisk until combined.
    3. Slowly pour small amounts of the vanilla and condensed milk mixture into the whipped cream, gently folding the mixture into the cream with a spatula.
*If you want vanilla ice cream, stop here. Put this mixture into a container and freeze. For mint chocolate chip ice cream, continue to the next steps.
    1. Gradually add the peppermint extract, food coloring, and mint chocolate chips and gently fold ingredients into the whipped cream mixture until combined.
    2. Put mixture into a large container and put in the freezer for 4-6 hours or overnight.
    3. Scoop your very own homemade ice cream and enjoy!

    Triple Berry Trifle

This berry treat is both delicious and braces friendly!

  • 1 cup chopped strawberries
  • 1 cup blueberries

  • 340g Cool Whip (or homemade whipped cream)

  • How To Make It:

    1. Add pudding mix and milk to a large bowl and make according to package directions.
    2. Add about half of the angel food cake pieces to the trifle dish.
    3. Top with about 1/2 of the prepared pudding.
    4. Top pudding with about 1/2 cup of each kind of berry.
    5. Top berries with about half of the cool whip.
    6. Repeat steps 2-5.
    7. Finish with additional berries on top.
