Braces and Proper Oral Hygiene

Oral Hygiene

At Lunsford Orthodontics, our mission is to provide each patient we serve with excellent orthodontic care. We offer a wide range of orthodontic treatment options to the residents of West Palm Beach, Wellington, Boynton Beach, Royal Palm Beach, and Lake Worth, FL. We understand that if you’re in need of orthodontic treatment, wearing braces for the first time can be a big lifestyle change. We want you to know that our job does not end when we put braces on your teeth. Because we truly care about all our patients, Dr. Lunsford and his team want to help you through the entire orthodontic process, which includes helping you maintain good oral hygiene while you’re improving your smile.

Below are a few oral hygiene tips brought to you by your West Palm Beach orthodontist. By following these tips, your treatment is much more likely to go as planned without you running into any problems like tooth decay or gum disease which are often caused by practicing improper oral hygiene.

Be a Master Brusher

While it’s always important to do a good job of brushing your teeth, proper brushing takes on even more importance when you have wires and brackets to brush around. We recommend brushing your teeth after each meal and before bedtime. Plan on spending at least 2 minutes brushing each time and be sure to brush all the surfaces of your teeth, along the gum line and the areas between your brackets and wires.

Floss Daily

You should be flossing your teeth at least one time per day to ensure your gums stay healthy and food does not become trapped between your teeth. If you find it difficult to floss while wearing braces, use a floss threader that’s designed to make it easier to work the floss into tight areas.

Use a Fluoride Mouth Rinse

While most people know that brushing and flossing is important for keeping the teeth and gums healthy, many people don’t realize that rinsing out the mouth with a fluoride mouthwash can help keep the teeth strong and healthy. Just use a fluoride rinse once per day (preferably at bedtime) to help protect your dental health.

Visit Your Family Dentist

You should be making a practice of seeing your family dentist twice per year for routine examinations and professional cleanings. These regular dental visits are especially important when you’re wearing braces, as there are many places for food and plaque to collect between the wires and brackets on your teeth.
