Can I Play Sports With Braces?

Playing Sports with BracesIf Dr. Joseph Lunsford, your West Palm Beach orthodontist, has just placed braces on your teeth, you might be worried that you can’t play your favorite sports because of the appliances on your teeth. There’s no need to worry because we’ve got some great news to share with you! You can continue playing sports while wearing braces if you take a few precautions so you don’t get hurt or damage your braces.

Wear A Protective Mouthguard For Braces

Playing sports while wearing braces can be dangerous for your teeth, gums, lips, and tongue if you don’t wear a protective mouthguard. While there are standard mouthguards available at sporting goods stores, you’ll need to pick up an orthodontic mouthguard to wear that’s made specifically for people wearing braces. While some sports stores carry these special mouthguards, you can easily find a wide variety online that come in all sizes, styles, and colors.

Mouthguards made for braces are a little wider than standard mouthguards to make sure they fit snugly over both your teeth and braces. Take your time when shopping for one so you’re sure to get one that fits right. The mouthguard you choose should have a snug fit and allow you to speak and breathe comfortably.

What To Do In Case Of An Accident

Whenever you’re actively playing sports, there’s always a chance that you could end up harming your braces or teeth. A wildly thrown ball or an elbow to the mouth is all it takes for an accident to occur. If something does happen that ends up breaking a bracket or wire on your braces, remove yourself from the game so you don’t do any more damage to your braces or yourself!

If the bracket or wire is still attached, leave it be and apply some orthodontic wax if it’s irritating you. If a part of your braces comes completely off, make sure you find the piece so you can bring it with you to your next appointment. Then call our office as soon as you can so we can give you further instructions.
