Eating Well While Wearing Braces

Foods to Avoid While Wearing Braces

When you’re wearing braces, it’s important that you avoid two specific categories of food because of the damage they can do. These are hard foods and sticky foods. Hard foods have the potential to break your brackets or wires. Sticky foods can tug on your braces and cause brackets or wires to loosen or even be completely pulled off. This type of breakage may prolong your treatment. Because of this, you’ll need to avoid foods like:

  • Chips

  • Nuts

  • Tacos

  • Bagels

  • Gum

  • Caramel

  • Taffy

Foods You Should Cut Back On

The foods that you should cut back on include acidic foods and sugary foods. Acidic foods attack the tooth enamel, which can cause tooth decay, while sugary foods cause bacteria in your mouth to produce more acid, leading yet again to tooth decay. While you won’t need to completely cut these foods out of your diet, it’s important that you eat them in moderation. These foods include:

  • Cookies

  • Cake

  • Candy

  • Soda

  • Fruit juices

  • Sports drinks

  • Tomatoes

  • Pickles

  • Pineapples

Braces-Friendly Foods

Having looked through all those foods, you may feel like there’s nothing left for you to eat! Thankfully though, there are a number of foods that aren’t just safe for you to eat, but they’re beneficial for your teeth as well. The foods that we strongly recommend are those that are high in calcium or fiber. Calcium will help strengthen your teeth and your jaw bones. Foods that are high in fiber require more chewing; this chewing will produce extra saliva, which can help keep your teeth clean. Examples of these foods include:

  • Milk

  • Cheese

  • Yogurt

  • Leafy greens

  • Beans

  • Broccoli

  • Berries
