How to Floss with Braces

How to Floss with Braces
Posted on 06/14/2018

Flossing is an essential component to any good oral hygiene routine, clearing away food particles and bacteria from the areas that your toothbrush can’t reach to keep your mouth healthy and free from tooth decay. For patients going through orthodontic treatment to get a new smile, maintaining a thorough and consistent oral hygiene routine becomes more important, since braces are notorious for trapping food particles that can put that new smile that you’re working towards at risk. While the process for brushing your teeth remains mostly the same other than adding on an extra minute of brushing for a more extensive clean, flossing poses more of a challenge with the archwire in the way. At Lunsford McCaffrey Orthodontics, we want to make sure that you have a perfect smile that’s free from decay when you finally get those braces off, so here is a simple guide on how to easily floss with braces and make sure that your smile is perfectly clean.

Using A Floss Threader

Before you start flossing, you need to gather up the right tools for the job. We recommend using floss that is waxed, since it will be easier for the thread to slide between the space between your teeth, especially where your teeth may be crowded. Next, you should get your hands on a floss threader, which will make flossing with your braces extremely easy. Just put the floss through the loop of the floss threader, then push the threader underneath the archwire and you’ll be able to floss your teeth without a problem! If you need any help on how to use your floss threader, you can visit us at Lunsford McCaffrey Orthodontics and a member of our staff will be able to guide you. It’s recommended that you floss at least once every day, such as after you brush your teeth before you go to bed.

Waterpik With An Orthodontic Tip

Waterpiks are an amazing oral hygiene tool that makes it easier to wash away bacteria and plaque with a gentle, concentrated beam of water. Waterpiks also come with a variety of tips that you can interchange for a different effect, with one tip being designed specifically for use with orthodontic appliances like braces. This tip has tiny bristles that you can safely brush across your braces as the jet of water blasts away plaque, bacteria, and food buildup that is caught up in your braces or teeth. While a waterpik can improve your oral health, it should not be used as a replacement for your normal flossing routine. Instead, combine flossing and waterpiking to ensure that your smile is as clean as possible.
