Common Orthodontic Problems

Crossbite

If the upper teeth rest inside the lower teeth when you bite down, this is what is known as a crossbite. It is best to correct crossbites early because they can cause biting and chewing issues.

Crowding

If you have a small dental arch or if you have large teeth, you may be suffering from crowding. Crowding can lead to impacted teeth, bite problems and an undesirable appearance. Crowding can also sometimes cause the bone and gums over the teeth to recede and become thin.

Deep Bite

A deep bite occurs when the lower front teeth bite too close to your upper teeth or directly into your gums. This can cause discomfort, wear down your incisors and sometimes even damage the bone behind your upper teeth.

Open Bite

If your upper teeth and lower teeth do not touch, it is what is known as an open bite. Open bites will put all the pressure on the back teeth when you chew. This can make chewing less efficient and cause excessive wear on the back teeth.

Overjet or Protruding Upper Teeth

Overjet occurs when your upper teeth stick out too far forward from the lower front teeth. This can cause problems with the biting of your back teeth and make your upper teeth more prone to injury. An overjet may also indicate an unevenness in jaw growth when the lower jaw is shorter than the upper jaw.

Spacing

Spacing is the opposite of crowding and it occurs when you have missing teeth, small teeth or a dental arch that is particularly wide. Spacing issues can result in teeth that are aesthetically unappealing.

Underbite or Protruding Lower Jaw

An underbite is a malocclusion in which the lower jaw extends out farther than the upper jaw. This problem will cause the lower teeth to sit in front of the upper teeth and will sometimes result in a crossbite.
