Starting your kids with orthodontic treatment establishes a foundation for a healthy smile that will last them for the rest of their life. The very first step of building that foundation is their first visit with the orthodontist. For parents and kids alike, the first appointment can be a bit nerve-racking, but there is absolutely nothing to worry about. To make sure that both you and your kids have the most comfortable appointment possible when you choose us at Lunsford McCaffrey Orthodontics for your child’s orthodontic care, we’ve put together this guide on what to expect at the first visit.

What To Do Before The Appointment

Your child’s first appointment with the orthodontist should be around age 6 or 7. At this age, your kids can be more sensitive to their experiences, which can leave a lasting impression on them. With this in mind, it’s important to remember that creating a positive experience is essential because they will associate going to the orthodontist as a good thing. This will also make it easier to get them to go to future appointments, and make it more likely for them to take good care of their smile.

Before the appointment, we recommend that parents have a short discussion with their kids, telling them all about what to expect at the appointment. This way, your kids are never surprised or scared by anything that happens during the appointment. If you need help figuring out what to say to your kids, you can always contact us and our staff will be able to assist you.

Meeting The Team & Touring Our Office

When you and your child first arrive for the appointment, the first step of the process is to get you both acclimated to our practice, giving you a tour around our office and introducing you to all the members of our team, including Dr. Lunsford and Dr. McCaffrey. This ensures that your kids no longer feel as if our team is a group of strangers, but instead, people who are going to help them be healthy.

A Thorough Examination

After the tour and introductions, the next step is performing a thorough examination of your child’s oral health. We will also take x-rays and any other necessary images which will be used later when planning any recommended treatment for your child. During this process, we encourage your kids to ask any questions that come to mind. They may be wondering about what the tools we are using are, or what everything we’re doing is for. This will help them feel more comfortable throughout the visit.

Creating A Personalized Treatment Plan

Once your child’s orthodontist has all the information and images from the examination, they will review the results with you and your child, going over any bite development issues that would require treatment, as well as the recommended treatment options. We recommend that you ask any questions that you may have about treatment at any time, and we will always be more than happy to provide you with whatever answers and information you need. We will work closely with you to craft a personalized treatment plan for your kids that meets your needs and ensures that your child has the best smile possible. Once the treatment plan is made, it’s your choice to move forward with treatment by scheduling your child’s next appointment with us.
